You know those people who are always cold? Yeah, that's me. I never leave home without a sweater, even in the summer. This Thanksgiving, I spent the entire dinner with a beanie on because I was so chilly. Unsurprisingly, I have an extensive coat collection. Puffy, wool, long and short — I have them all. And because of that, I actually like fall and winter. I don't mind frigid temps because I've spent many years curating a coat collection that has me covered — pun intended — no matter the occasion.
I've purchased coats from tons of different retailers, but Walmart was never one of them. Recently, though, I've been impressed with the retailer's fashion selection (check out my latest haul here!). So when the thermostat started to dip a few weeks back, I did something wild — I bought nine coats from Walmart.
Now before you wonder how I could afford such a shopping spree and/or where I intend to store all the coats, this shopping adventure was purely for research purposes. Yes, friends, I did this for you. If you've ever wondered about the quality, warmth or style factor of Walmart's outerwear selection, I've got the scoop. Keep reading to see which coats I recommend and which ones I'm considering keeping.
Free Assembly Double Breasted Peacoat
My initial impression? No one will ever think this coat is from Walmart! The quality of the material and the beautiful buttons give it the appearance of something from a much fancier store. While this coat fit well in my regular size with just a shirt underneath, it became a little snug with a sweater. Also, the sleeves were a bit too short for my longer arms. Overall, I'd recommend this style for mild winter days, but I don't think it'd work as well when it's super cold.
Available in both navy and cream, this wool-like coat is great for anyone looking for a dressier style that isn't super long. It looks polished and put-together, but the shorter length means you can still show off your shape. As for fit, if you want room to layer underneath, I'd suggest ordering a size up.
Short coats are usually a no-go for me because I like booty coverage, but this style really surprised me. It looks so good in person and it's not overly bulky (so you won't feel like a marshmallow). In addition to the navy version I tried, it comes in a festive red plaid and cream corduroy.
I have to admit, I'm pretty surprised this coat only has 3.7 out of 5 stars at Walmart. But that's based on a pretty small number of reviewers, so I'm pretty sure those stats will improve as more people get their hands on it.
Like me, another Walmart shopper was pleasantly surprised by this buy. "This coat exceeds expectations," they wrote in their review. "It's heavy, well made and hangs beautifully! And as a 5'3” woman, the arms are not too long which was a nice surprise. Love it."
Rather than think of this style as an actual coat, I think jacket is more accurate. It's lightweight and it looks good — it's just not especially warm, which is what I expect when I buy a coat.
Folks who live in a milder climate or who run naturally warm should definitely give it a try. It comes in tan and black in sizes XS-3X.
Stylish yes, warm no — that's my overall take on this corduroy pick. It does look cute with jeans and comes in two different colors (this olive tone or a dark navy).
The coat's two front pockets are big enough to hold your keys, phone and a small wallet so you don't need to lug around a bag while wearing it. Sizes from from XS-4X.
Okay, so plaid's not for you? Don't pass this coat up just yet. It also comes in camel, red and black. It fits really nicely and people will never know you scored this topper for less than $50. "The coat looks far more expensive than its price point," one shopper wrote in their review. "It has two functional pockets, fully lined and the back is vented."
Though I probably wouldn't buy this coat again, I will say this: It's a perfect coat for a holiday party or a holiday card photo shoot. It really does perfectly embody Vergara's glam aesthetic and it will make any outfit look instantly for fabulous.
Will I ever be able to afford a coat from The Row? No, never. Does this Walmart style look exactly like its $4,300 design? Yup! That's why it's not surprising that this style is already a bestseller at Walmart. "This coat exceeded my expectations 1,000%," one shopper raved. "The material is supple and actually has some weight. It is well made and quite warm."
Yes, I aspire to be a woman who gets invited to fancy events where a coat like this would be appropriate. That said, who is to say you can't throw this bad boy over your leggings and sweatshirt and wear it to the grocery store? Or with trousers and blouse and walk into work like a boss? You make the rules!
Free Assembly Short Puffer Jacket
I don't normally wear a lot of plaid, but this cute little coat won me over. While the print is subtle, it makes it so much more special than a plain black puffer. And the corduroy collar? Such a nice, stylish touch! As far as puffy coats go, this isn't the heaviest, thickest style I've ever worn, so I don't think it'd work in below-freezing temps. That said, it's good-looking in person and I'm tempted to not return this one...
Free Assembly Faux Wool Long Coat
For this coat, I got outside counsel. First, I put on my black Cinzia Rocca coat — purchased at T.J.Maxx to be clear! — then I put on this black Walmart coat. I asked my partner which he liked better and he legit could not tell that I'd switched coats at all. That's how good this Walmart coat is! When I took it out of the plastic, I was shocked. I knew the product description said "faux wool," but honestly, it looks and feels like the real thing to me. If I didn't already have a black coat that's basically identical to this one, I'd 100% keep it.
Time and Tru Teddy Fleece Coat with Funnel Neck
I'll admit, I'm a sucker for a teddy coat. When the trend first took off a few years back, I went all in and bought two different options. When I scrolled past this Walmart style, I did a double take — and didn't think twice about adding it to my cart. When it arrived, I'll admit I was a little underwhelmed. It's not as plush as some of the other sherpa styles I've touched, it's not very warm and the silhouette is a bit shapeless. If you're not looking for a true winter coat, then this pick may work for you. But if it's warmth you seek, look elsewhere.
Free Assembly Corduroy Jacket with Faux Shearling Trim
I had high hopes for this jacket, but sadly, it was a miss for me. The sherpa material wasn't great and the craftsmanship was a little sloppy. As you can see, the collar was uneven on mine and one of the shoulders refused to lay flat because there was some excess stuffing at the seam. I could see this being a cute jacket to take pics for Instagram in, but practically speaking, I wouldn't say it's a great piece to use as a winter coat.
Time and Tru Faux Wool Solid Button Front Coat
This plaid pick gives major "Hallmark movie" vibes. That's not necessarily my personal style, but I know lots of folks love that look so I took one for the team and tried this baby on. I have to say, I didn't hate it. The material is good quality, it has a bit of shape to it and the colors are neutral enough to wear with just about anything in your closet. While it's not something I'd wear, I'd recommend it as a worthy Walmart steal.
Sofia Jeans Faux Fur Trim Coat
I was so impressed with the Sofia Jeans trench I snagged at Walmart's Holiday deals event back in October that I decided to give another style from the line a try. I went with this camel coat with a faux fur trim. It's more glamorous than my everyday coats, but I like the fit (especially how the belt cinches the waist). The material, on the other hand, felt very thin to me, which is likely why it held wrinkles worse than any of the other coats I ordered. At $59, it's still pretty affordable, but also on the expensive end of coats at Walmart. Personally, this style is a pass for me.
Scoop Faux Wool Oversized Double Breasted Coat
Okay, this is my number one! Yes, it's a little long on me, but I don't care. It's such an incredibly well-made coat and costs less than $60 — a true win. I'm a big fan of oversized styles and long coats, so it shouldn't be surprising that I gravitated toward this one. It's heavy and substantial and it looks and feels just like coats I've spent hundreds more on. I never thought I'd be singing the praises of a coat I purchased at Walmart, but here I am.
Scoop Faux Fur Oversized Maxi Coat
Do I have anywhere to wear a full-length faux fur coat? Nope. Did I order one anyway just for fun? You know it! I have to say, I kind of love this style. The material is super soft, the coat itself offers a lot of warmth and it fits true to size. It's completely impractical for my current life, but if I had the closet space to spare and regularly attended galas or balls, I'd keep this one.
