Remember when Baby Houseman bragged that she'd "carried a watermelon" in Dirty Dancing? Yeah, it would've been more impressive if she'd said she'd "cubed a watermelon" — a truly arduous task. Cutting those giant, wobbly orbs in half is a feat in and of itself, but removing the flesh in a uniform, non-haphazard way? That takes a fruit whisperer. Or the Yidada Watermelon Cutter. Videos showing this $8 tool in action have gone viral, and it's not hard to see why: It works quickly and safely to produce perfect cubes that'll make your fruit salad look like something Martha Stewart would serve. Snag one before your next summer bash — it'll make cookout prep a breeze.
If you love corn but hate getting it stuck in your teeth when you eat it off the cob, this stripper scrapes the kernels off for you, and it's on sale for less than $7. Of course, you could use a knife, but if you’ve done this, you know how messy it gets. The kernels tend to fly everywhere and you have to be careful that your knife doesn’t slip. Use it on raw or cooked corn. Simply insert the cob into the blade and press down as you twist to remove the kernels. It’s super fast and very easy.
“I stripped 15 ears of sweet corn in less than 5 minutes,” wrote one Amazon reviewer.
Once you realize what a time- and effort-saver this gizmo is, it'll be melon mania in your kitchen.
So, how does this odd-looking contraption work? Well, you'll still need to quarter your watermelon the traditional way (sorry, there's no getting around that). But once that's done, you just place the cutter against the cut side of one quarter and push. Its windmill-like blades will portion the fruit into evenly sized cubes as you go, with the long handle acting as a sort of conveyor belt for the cut pieces. There's even a handy measuring guide on the side should you want your cubes to be a certain height.
From there, you'll empty the cubes from the handle as you go and work your way through the watermelon row by row. No more slippery knives or jagged pieces that look like a toddler sliced them. Once you're finished (which should be quite soon after you start), simply rinse the cutter with water to clean — easy.
Over 1,000 Amazon customers are making barbecue prep easier thanks to this watermelon cutter.
"Worked like a charm ... and made it so much easier to dice with less mess," raved a fruit fan. "Highly recommend."
"It works!" exclaimed another. "Cutting up a watermelon takes time, and when we saw this tool, we had to try it ... [we] are very happy with the way it cuts our melon with ease. Well worth it!"
"I eat one to two watermelons per week in the summer, and this is one of the best, life-enhancing kitchen gadgets I have," praised a pleased produce prepper. "It makes easy work of cutting watermelon, especially when you're cutting up multiple. I've used it for six months now, even with the occasional winter watermelon when I find them, and nothing has broken, shifted or fallen off in that time."
As with many products you use for the first time, there might be a learning curve. "After a little practice, the watermelon cutter works [well]," shared a generally satisfied slicer. "Be sure to follow instructions and be careful, as the blades are sharp."
"This thing makes it so easy, without any special knife skills!" exclaimed a final buyer. "It doesn't get the edges, but that's where the included melon baller comes in. Press it down, rotate and boom ... nice melon ball for those 'hard to reach' areas."
