It's no secret that celebs are head over heels for Adidas sneakers. We've caught J.Lo sprinting to the gym in her favorite Ultraboost running shoes and stars like Dakota Johnson and Emily Ratajkowski walking a city mile in their cool-kid Sambas. And just when I thought I'd seen all the cute, comfy kicks Adidas had to offer, along comes footage of Jennifer Lawrence rocking a pair of the brand's traffic-stopping Tokyo shoes, which are poised to be the 'It' sneaker of summer (and the newest shoe in my closet as soon as I'm done writing this).
If you're into metallics, you're in luck. The sneaker comes in both gold and silver — these sparkly neutrals go with everything.
If the Tokyos look familiar, it's probably because Adidas created them to coincide with the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, and their popularity continued through the '70s. With their re-release, they're available in classic color combos like blue on white and orange on pink and in '80s-inspired neons and metallics — think silver, gold and neon green — that double-down on the nostalgia. And at an under-$100 price point, $90 to be exact, this popular pair is accessible but selling out fast, especially in certain sizes and colors (like Lawrence's red stripes-on-white version).
Still, there are plenty of colors to choose from, and the Tokyos have a low profile that complements all kinds of outfits. With their streamlined shape, they're the antithesis of the chunky shoe trend, so they broadcast 'chic' instead of 'sporty.' In fact, Lawrence was snapped by paps on two separate occasions wearing these sneakers with both wide-leg jeans and a midi skirt. Personally, I'd pair Adidas Tokyos with maxi sundresses, T-shirt dresses and wide-leg linen pants this summer.
I know what you're thinking. That gum sole looks pretty thin. But remember, Adidas Tokyo shoes were originally designed for running track, and that's what the silhouette is inspired by. They're meant to be lightweight and mold to your foot, and the sole is extra grippy to prevent slips and falls. The modern-day Tokyo shoe is designed for all-day comfort since that's what active folks want nowadays.
If you don't believe me, check out what shoppers are saying about these new sneakers of the moment.
"The most comfortable shoes I own. I wear them to work almost daily and patients always comment on how stylish they are," one fan gushed of the Adidas Tokyos.
Another shopper raved, "Pleasantly surprised. Instantly very comfortable. I was worried the sole would be too thin, but it's very durable and has enough support. Looks even better in person. Sleek and cute."
A third summed it up nicely, saying, "The Tokyo has the perfect blend of style and comfort. It has almost a zero-drop design, which makes it much more comfortable to wear all day long compared to extremely cushioned shoes. I would compare this to a loafer, but in sneaker form. Minimal padding and cushioning, lightweight and simple. There is cushioning under the foot arch."
The versatility of this fun footwear has one Adidas devotee hooked. "Looks so cute with everything. Got them to wear as smart casual at work with wide legged trousers," they wrote.
And about that 'It' shoe status? 'It' girls are already on board. "I love these Tokyo shoes. They are comfortable and look so great on — minimalistic cool!" exclaimed a footwear fanatic. "I was ready to try something other than Sambas (which I do love) and glad I went for it."
