While heart disease doesn't always get the same level of attention as other women's health conditions, like breast or cervical cancer, it's the leading cause of death in women across most demographics. In fact, according to the recently released 2025 Heart Disease & Stroke Statistical Update fro the American Heart Association (AHA), 45% of all women over 20 years old have some form of cardiovascular disease, but only about half of women realize it's the No. 1 killer for women.
Even more to the point, an estimated 80% of all cardiovascular disease is preventable, but without increased awareness, early diagnosis and early treatment, lives continue to be lost too soon. In 2021, more than 310,000 women lost their lives to cardiovascular disease.
In a February 2025 press release, Nancy Brown, CEO of the AHA, shared, "Women still remain underdiagnosed and undertreated. At the American Heart Association, we are working to change the future of health."
The organization's nationwide, female-focused initiatives to increase heart disease awareness and resources are helping pave the way for better outcomes. In February, in conjunction with American Heart Month, the organization is spearheading major initiatives, including National Wear Red Day (the first Friday in February) and the Go Red for Women movement, which takes place throughout the month. These initiatives encourage women to pull out their favorite red gear and wear it proudly to help increase education and impact. "Go Red for Women is a powerful movement that connects women across the country to share information, motivation and inspiration. Together we can harness that support system to create better health outcomes for all women," Brown says.
Here at Yahoo, we're adding red gear to our wardrobes and wearing it proudly while starting conversations with friends, family and our online audience about the importance of regular health screenings, engaging in heart-healthy behaviors and seeking early treatment. In addition to wearing red (we're sharing some of our favorite red picks below, including those that support AHA-sponsored research for women's heart disease), Brown points out that there are other ways to get involved this month. Wear red throughout the month of February. Share on social media using #WearRedAndGive, #HeartMonth and #GoRedforWomen.
Learn Life's Essential 8 for women. Women experience changes throughout life that can increase their risk of heart disease and stroke. Specifically, physical and hormonal changes that take place during pregnancy and menopause can significantly affect heart health. The American Heart Association’s Life’s Essential 8 are measures all women should be aware of for improving and maintaining cardiovascular health throughout their lives.
Celebrate survivors and communities championing women's health. If you know a woman who has survived a heart attack or stroke, share and celebrate her story to help increase awareness.
Learn CPR. The American Heart Association is urging every American family to learn CPR to protect the ones they love most.
Make a donation to support women's heart health research. Every dollar counts. In addition to online donations through the AHA website, you can shop official Go Red gear on the ShopHeart store, or you can make a donation at your local CVS; throughout February, shoppers have the option to add a donation during checkout, or you can donate online.
Get screened and know your numbers. There's no time like the present to schedule an appointment with your doctor and brush up on the numbers that may indicate whether you're at risk for cardiovascular disease. Total cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index can help paint a picture of your current heart health and help you and your care provider make proactive decisions to keep your heart healthy.
