Summer's coming. That means summer reading. That means lazing in a lounge chair, book in one hand, beverage in the other. Are you thinking what we're thinking? (Amazon)(Amazon)
Did you celebrate Earth Day a few days ago? It's great that you care enough to tend to the planet — now how about cultivating your mind? And don't make me ask about that 2025 resolution of yours to read more. Sorry-not-sorry if any of these admonitions seem guilt-trippy, but they're in the service of letting you know that the Amazon Book Sale is live now through April 28 and, well, you won't get a better chance anytime soon to build some brain cells while saving some serious scarole.
As you know, Amazon doesn't do anything small, so we're seeing a ton of titles on sale at mind-melting markdowns. To wit: You can score up to 65% off children's books, including a 50%-off steal on the complete How to Train Your Dragon box set. Another box-set deal? A stunning 51% off the entire Three-Body Problem series. Like Colleen Hoover? Well, you can snag nearly every one of her titles for at least 40% off (and by the time you're finished reading the first one, she'll have written three more). Are you partial to tales of senior citizens freelancing on the homicide beat? Books one through three of Robert Thorogood's Marlow Murder Club series are marked down 31, 50 and 55%, respectively.
I've perused tens of thousands A LOT of books and curated a particularly compelling collection. Nearly all are recent publications, with a few gems from the recent past tossed in. All are Amazon Editors' Picks or otherwise critically lauded reads.
I've included paper-and-ink incarnations here, but you should know that the Amazon Book Sale is offering up to 80% off ebooks rated four stars or higher. You can also earn triple points on Kindle Rewards purchases through April 25 and new customers can sign up for Audible for just $0.99/month for the first three months. Oh, I've also highlighted some stellar sales on Amazon e-readers. But first: the books!
Emily Henry knows how to write a rom-com. She's penned a bunch of bestselling beach reads (including one titled Beach Read), and she's back with one of the season's most-anticipated releases. It's Reese Witherspoon's May book club pick, so make sure Mom has a copy of this "mystery, romance and thriller all rolled into one captivating story" (Reese's words, not mine).
In this, the first adult-targeted novel by the YA rock-star author Elston, a woman is set up by her grifter boss with a new identity and life in an unfamiliar town with an eye toward long-conning a local.
"Head still spinning!" raved this thrill-riding reviewer. "It's been a minute since I've read a book that made me hold my breath. In the beginning, I wasn't sure where this story was going. Then, like the initial climb on a roller coaster, the first drop hit and the twists and turns started!"
This hardcover tome, featuring 200 recipes from the author's familia, was a classic in the making back when it originally pubbed in 2012. Now, with Tucci a household name via his culinary travelogue on CNN, it's a downright countertop essential, and at over 55% off to boot.
"Each recipe has a short story, which makes actually reading this cookbook incredibly interesting," began this at-home chef. They continued: "The book itself is great quality; Honestly, it's beautiful. The pages are thick gloss, which would easily wipe clean (if you're a messy cook like I am). The recipes are easy to follow, with beautiful photos and readily available ingredients. ... Buy it. You will be glad you did."
A new arrival in a chi-chi gated community in Oregon discovers it's a hotbed of gossip, intrigue ... and worse in this 60%-off nail-biting thriller.
"My wife and I both read this and we actually agreed that this book was so suspenseful that we each finished in two days," related this spellbound spouse. "It always had us guessing who did what to whom."
This 2019 Oprah's Book Club pick is still dazzling Amazon readers with the depiction of its titular relationship, which is tested and then some through a from-out-of-nowhere but all-too-common twist of fate. Snag a copy now for more than half off.
"Deeply human and sad," summed up this reader. "It is difficult to express in words the impact this novel had on me. It is, first and foremost, about [the] strength, power and healing that comes from LOVE in all of its different shapes and forms. It is also about the impact of injustice, about deep wounds that come from racism and about the struggle of being and remaining human no matter what."
A New York Times and USA Today bestseller, as well as an NPR Best Book of the Year pick, Quinn's 50%-off, time-toggling novel tells the story of two intrepid women who find themselves roped into the espionage game in war-torn Europe.
For this reader, the novels hits that literary sweet spot of immersion and escape: "Fascinating story of female spies in WWI, and the reverberations of wartime injustices into the following decades. That it takes place mostly in France and London doesn’t hurt at all."
Astute, often outrageous, sometimes profane and, for some latter-day observers, a bit "problematic," cartoonist Robert Crumb was, undeniably, an icon of pop-culture art.
This being a brand-spanking-new release, reviews are scarce as of press time, but this guy's clearly a fan: "A comprehensive look into the life and accomplishments of a controversial artist. Nadler reveals a complex character from a dysfunctional family [and a] flawed man who was a trailblazer for the adult comic industry."
Talk about the best of both worlds: This is a limited-edition hardcover of Reid's celebrated 2024 novel and it's 60% off.
Evelyn Hugo is a reclusive Hollywood legend who entrusts a struggling journalist to pen her biography. The assignment will illuminate both women's lives while we readers are treated to lots of juicy (if fictitious) Tinseltown tales.
More than 176,000 readers have bestowed five-star blessings on it. Here's what one of them had to say: "Evelyn is a fascinating and complex character — ruthless, ambitious, and fiercely loyal to those she loves. ... The book captures not only the intoxicating allure of classic Hollywood but also the emotional toll of fame, forbidden love and personal reinvention."
A recent "Best Books" pick by the staff of the New Yorker, Lalami has crafted a dystopian thriller for our algorithm-ed, AI-ed, pervasively surveilled times in which a woman finds her life suddenly turned upside down by an all-too-vigilant government.
Said this shaken shopper: "I highly recommend this book to all lovers of futuristic, horror and women's fiction [genres]. This is a look at what can happen when we let our lives become too entangled with 'smart' products, allow cookies into our lives, and allow any company that mines for data to get ahold of us. It's too late for most of us, but had I read this novel decades ago, I would never have let a computer or smartphone into my life."
Sounds like fun, huh?
That subtitle really says it all, so we'll just add that the stories of Elizabeth Blackwell, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and Sophia Jex-Blake (who'd go on to play integral parts in the establishment of women-run hospitals and teaching colleges) make for important uncovered history.
"I have read a book a week for the last four years, and even before that I was a very avid reader," related this not at all hyperbolic fan. "This is the best book I’ve ever read (apart from Harry Potter.)"
For murder-story fans who'd like to exercise their investigative skills, Karber crafts a series of (increasingly challenging) crime-solving puzzles, each presenting the reader with a Suspect, Location, and Weapon.
"Excellent for the armchair detective," declared this seasoned deducer. "Rather than just offering a list of clues, the reader is also provided a method to solve the mysteries — a grid. Using the grid, the solver is able to eliminate or add suspects, weapons, and locations to logically resolve the puzzles."
This hot-off-the-presses title needs no help from us to incite interest — it's by Beyonce's mom!
"Ms. Tina tells a captivating story with special attention to the relationship mothers have with their daughters," this reader gushed. "One of the best memoirs I’ve read in years. It really paints a beautiful portrait of a woman I have long respected."
Very much not to be confused with Clare Boothe Luce's catty 1936 classic, this historical novel tells the story of "Frankie" McGrath, whose mid-'60s enlistment in the Army Nurses Corps takes her to the hellscape of Vietnam and, later, finds her not so welcomed by a tumultuously divided nation.
"It definitely ripped my heart out, but I would do it all over again to read this masterpiece for the first time," said this stunned reader. "You feel everything! You root for certain outcomes. You experience what life was like for our soldiers both in Vietnam and once they returned home!"
An ironic title if ever we saw one, Harris' investigative deep dive into the (mis)deeds of the iconic American brand puts her in the running for a place in the muckraking pantheon.
"Very alarming!" shouted this shopper. "Calls into question all our preconceived notions about prominent brands in the life sciences industry, regulators that are supposed to police the industry, and scientists/clinicians who are supposed to follow the science and report only on their educated interpretation of the data."
This one checks a lot of boxes: If you're into media history, Hollywood glamour, the vagaries of modern celebrity or just like sinking your teeth into a juicy, fast-paced bio, Carter, the erstwhile Vanity Fair editor, has got you covered.
This reader employs an aptly cinematic take in their review: "It’s like going backstage to meet the star, the director, and get a peek at how everything from lighting to sound of a play brings it together. ... Read it for a dive into journalism history but stay for the gossip, the evolution of Spy, and the lavish expense account spending."
