April is here, and with it comes a new batch of free games for Windows! What's that — you didn't know you could get games for absolutely nothing at Amazon? Well, you can if you're an Amazon Prime member. Every month the site gives out a bunch of free games to download, and they're yours to keep even if you cancel your Amazon Prime subscription.
But why would you? Being a member offers so many perks like free two-day shipping, great streaming shows and movies and exclusive savings throughout the year. Not yet a member? No problem. You can sign up for your free 30-day trial here.
This month some big name titles join the roster from series you know and love, including The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Interested in exploring deep, expansive worlds? Into epic fantasy adventures about restoring lost heirs to the throne? Well, this open-world title might be just up your alley! The "game of the year" edition is free right now at Amazon, and it includes both the 'Knight of the Nine' and 'Shivering Isles' expansions so you're getting all the content available in one handy package.
To save $20 and claim this freebie, you'll need to have a GOG.com account. Don’t worry, GOG is free and easy to sign up for and use. It'll also come in handy for claiming other free games on the site, as well as future Amazon Prime Gaming offers.
If you prefer something a little sillier, gaming powerhouse EA has made Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville available as part of this month's Amazon Prime Gaming freebies. Not familiar with this wacky, madcap franchise of flora versus undead fauna? Well, this is the perfect time to jump on board with the 2019 sequel that introduces nine new gameplay classes and open zones to explore and complete quests.
This fun game is $40 on Steam, but Amazon Prime subscribers can get it for free from Origin, so you'll need a free account from there. Don't have one? You can sign up for free and claim lots of other great giveaways on the site throughout the year!
If you're looking for something to make you laugh — something more brainy than brawny — Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck’s Revenge is a hilarious click-and-point pirate adventure. This is a classic game that came out over 30 years ago, now reimagined with new graphics, audio and even a few surprises. It's a great game to play with the kids in your life, or just a way to relive the long-ago days of your gaming youth.
This usually $10 title is free through the Amazon Games app — which you should definitely download if you haven't already.
Did you grow up playing tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons or Shadowrun? Or maybe you still play, but just can't get friends together at the same time to get a session going? Galaxy of Pen and Paper is a title that relives the old days of playing pen and paper adventures, hanging out in dial-up chat rooms and just plain having a good time with friends late into the evening. You'll participate in turn-based battles, customize your characters and hopefully have a galactic time when you download this normally $15 game for free via the Amazon Games app.
Don't fancy yourself much of a twitchy gamer, but possess a killer typing speed? Nanotale - Typing Chronicles might just be the game for you. Instead of shooting at things, you'll need to type the words on screen as quickly as possible in order to progress through this epic story. It's a long way from the days of Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, placing you into the shoes of a young archivist who must solve the mystery of a dying world losing its magic. This challenging game would normally cost you $20 on Steam, but you can download it for free right now through the Amazon Games app.
More tactically-minded gamers will enjoy the antics of Guild of Ascension, where you traverse brightly colored boards in search of treasure — but you'll need to befriend or defeat all sorts of strange creatures first. Making your job a little easier is the ability to craft weapons, learn new skills and team up with the members of your party to creature extra-powerful attacks! Sound intriguing? Skip paying $15 on Steam and snag this game for free on the Amazon Games app.
Is it an action game? A simulation title? Or a comedy game? How about all of the above, as you become the ever-cheerful Turnip Boy in this silly adventure where you can grow crops, solve puzzles and oh yeah, try to pay (or not pay) your government taxes! You even get to rip up your tax papers, which will feel pretty good if you're struggling with your tax bill in real life! And you don't have to pay a single dime if you're an Amazon Prime member.
